Wanda Barzee was one of Elizabeth Smart’s captors back in 2002 – but where is the convicted kidnapper now?

Netflix has dropped its next big true crime documentary, Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart, which delves into what happened when a 14-year-old girl from Utah was taken from her bedroom in the early hours of the morning.

For nine months, Elizabeth’s family and friends were desperately searching for her with little to no leads until her younger sister Mary Katherine, who she shared a bedroom with, remembered the captor’s voice.

It was realised that Elizabeth had been taken by “Emmanuel”, whose real name is Brian David Mitchell, a street preacher who was hired to work on the Smart family home a year before.

But Mitchell didn’t act alone as he kept Elizabeth hostage with help from his wife Wanda Barzee, with all three living in a tent in the mountains.

Mitchell, who Elizabeth said raped her daily, and Wanda believed he was a prophet and justified their actions by claiming they were doing God’s bidding.

After Mary Katherine recalled where she knew the captor’s voice from, it didn’t take too long before both Mitchell and Barzee were caught and Elizabeth was found.

The final moments of the Netflix documentary reveals what happened to the pair, explaining: “Wanda Barzee pleaded guilty to kidnapping and transporting a minor across state lines for sexual activity. She was sentenced to 15 years in prison. She was released in 2018.”

As Barzee was diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder, she first served time at the Federal Medical Centre, Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas, before she was transferred to Utah State Prison in 2016.

When Barzee was granted early release two years later, Smart told CNN: “She [Barzee] is a woman who had six children and yet could co-conspire to kidnap a 14-year-old girl, and not only sit next to her while (she was) being raped, but encouraged her husband to continue to rape me.

“So, do I believe she is dangerous? Yes, but not just to me. I believe that she is a danger and a threat to any vulnerable person in our community.”

Barzee was once again arrested last year as she violated her conditions as a registered sex offender by visiting parks in Salt Lake City.

The 79-year-old woman is reportedly no longer in custody but it isn’t clear if she was released on bail or if she has legal representation.
