End of Freeview? An ‘exciting’ new way to stream TV for free is coming soon
Freeview remains one of the most popular ways to watch TV without paying for a subscription. This platform is still used by millions of homes to get their daily fix of entertainment, but its days could be numbered. Freely, which is actually owned by the same team behind Freeview, launched back in 2024 and, in that short space of time, has already amassed over one million customers. One of the big bonuses of Freely is that it doesn’t need an aerial with live and on-demand content beamed to the screen via broadband connection instead.
If that wasn’t enough to get homes thinking about making the switch, there could soon be even another reason to make the jump to this streaming service. A popular manufacturer of Freeview boxes has just confirmed that it’s moving its focus away from Freeview and concentrating on Freely.
As spotted by the eagle-eyed team at Cordbusters, Humax is no longer making its Freeview-powered Aura box.
This set-top device has been available for about 5 years and allows owners to record and store content on an in-built hard drive. Some stock remains available, but most major retailers have now discontinued sales of this device.
“The Humax Aura Freeview recorder is no longer in production, so availability is while stocks last within the retail channel,” Humax told Cordbusters.
Of course, Humax hasn’t ended its products. Instead, it appears that its next ‘exciting’ update will be all about Freely.
“Humax is developing some exciting new products and we will be making announcements on those in the next few weeks,” Humax confirmed.
Full details will hopefully be announced soon, but it appears that the box will include the ability to record and store 1,000 hours of content along with streaming shows and movies via a broadband connection.
It will support full 4K resolution content and include an aerial socket so homes get both a Freely connection and access to a standard telly signal as well.
Right now, there’s no word on an official launch date, but hopefully, more news will be announced soon.
