Meghan Markle ‘devastated’ as favourite designer dies aged 93 | Royal | News

The fashion world is in mourning after Valentino Garavani died yesterday at the age of 93, marking the end of an era for Italian high fashion. Revered for his timeless glamour, dramatic silhouettes and unmistakable elegance, Valentino spent decades dressing some of the most powerful and recognisable women in the world.

From Hollywood icons to political figures and royalty, his designs became synonymous with confidence and classic femininity. Among those who repeatedly turned to his creations was Meghan Markle, whose wardrobe choices have often reflected the polished confidence of the house.

Meghan, 44, is expected to be devastated by the designer’s passing given her long-standing affinity with the house and its aesthetic. The royal’s relationship with Valentino has unfolded across several key moments, each reinforcing her preference for strong tailoring and statement elegance.

That connection became particularly visible during the Invictus Games in April 2022, when she stepped out in an oversized white double-breasted Valentino suit.

The look, complete with wide-leg trousers and a matching One Stud bag, was widely interpreted as modern power dressing – commanding yet minimalist.

Her affinity for Valentino, however, stretches back well before her post-royal appearances. In September 2019, Meghan attended Misha Nonoo’s wedding wearing an £8,900 black tulle Valentino gown.

The bold designed featured puffed sleeves and intricate beaded detailing. The dramatic silhouette marked one of her boldest fashion moments, combining couture-level craftsmanship with theatrical flair.

It was a clear departure from understated dressing and instead leaned into the romantic grandeur for which Valentino became famous.

More recently, Meghan reportedly marked her 44th birthday in August 2025 wearing a white Valentino shift dress with strong 1960s mod influences.

Beyond clothing, Valentino’s influence has also appeared through Meghan’s choice of accessories. She has been spotted carrying Valentino handbags, including the red V-Ring style, and wearing the brand’s iconic Rockstud pumps.

Valentino Garavani passed away at his residence in Rome, surrounded by loved ones, according to his foundation. A public lying in state will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, allowing admirers to pay tribute, before a funeral takes place in the Italian capital on Friday.

Tributes have poured in from around the world, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailing him as an undisputed master of style and elegance.
