iPhone 18 Pro leak suggests Apple will ditch one of its iconic designs
If Apple sticks to its annual iPhone release schedule, we are still a good eight months away from the launch of the next flagship iPhones. But according to a new report from a prominent Apple leaker, we might already know some of the secrets of the iPhone 18 Pro.
According to the latest video from Front Page Tech’s Jon Prosser, a YouTuber that Apple reportedly sued last year regarding how he obtained early information about iOS 26 before it was announced, the iPhone 18 Pro will come in a new hero colour but also have a key difference compared to the iPhone 17 Pro.
Prosser claims the iPhone 18 Pro will ditch the Dynamic Island display notch first seen on 2022’s iPhone 14 Pro in favour of a single circular hole punch camera in the top left of the display – although the device will still have Face ID.
In the video, Prosser explains, not citing sources, that Apple has decided to move the camera and Face ID setup into the top left, though the features will be functionality the same. In the Dynamic Island, Apple uses software to turn the notch visually into a black pill share, which can expand depending on apps in use and notifications.
But the notch hides a pill-shaped Face ID cut out on the left and a circular camera cut out on the right, placed centrally.. If Prosser is correct, the iPhone 18 Pro moves these elements into the corner, and reverses their order, with the camera on the left. Face ID is then on the right but, most importantly for the visual change, is now underneath the screen.
This means Face ID would still work, but Apple would have found a way to hide it behind the pixels of the screen, meaning there is no longer the need for the notch.
Prosser claims Apple will retain the software pop ups iPhone owners have got used to from the Dynamic Island, but they will instead originate from the top left of the screen.
Other than this change, Apple is said to be mulling hero colour options to replace the iPhone 17 Pro’s Cosmic Orange flagship hue. The video heavily features burgundy, but brown and purple are also mooted.
Apple didn’t offer a black Pro iPhone for the first time in years with the 17 Pro and Pro Max, opting for the bright orange along with a dark blue and a silver option.
Prosser also trails “a massive upgrade” to the triple cameras on the rear, suggesting Apple will for the first time use a variable aperture main lens. This technology is common on dedicated cameras but rarely seen in smartphones due to size and general technology constraints. Huawei and Samsung have dabbled with variable aperture lenses in the past.
Prosser suggested this lens might be restricted to just the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which would mark a return to Apple splitting the capabilities of its two Pro phones. He also suggests the Camera Control button will no longer have a capacitive surface, so it won’t lets you swipe to zoom and perform other functions, unlike the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 range.
Also mooted are the A20 Pro chipset, with a faster and more efficient process and better battery life. Apple’s C2 modem is also expected, marking Apple’s divorce from Qualcomm’s modem technology.
With a final rumour added at the end of the video that Apple will integrate 5G via satellite on the 18 Pro, it’s looking like a decent upgrade for iPhone fans who want the very latest technology in their pocket. It will be a big year if the firm also releases its long-awaited foldable iPhone at the same event.
Prosser and others suggest Apple will, unusually, not launch a regular iPhone 18 at the September event, but other leaks suggest it will. Only time will tell come September just how many iPhones Apple launches this year, and whether or not these early whispers turn out to be true.
