BT, Sky and Virgin Media tested – the ‘best’ and ‘worst’ UK broadband confirmed

Broadband isn’t just a luxury anymore; it’s a necessity, with this technology keeping us entertained, our homes secure via connected cameras, and even allowing us to control things such as lights and heating. With more of us installing internet-connected devices, streaming movies and working from home, having a decent connection is now vital, and it appears some broadband providers are doing a better job of keeping things up to speed than others.

That’s according to a relatively new speed service called SpeedGo, which lets users test their connection to see how it compares to others in the local area.

SpeedGo says that Virgin Media comes top of the charts for downloads across the UK, with the provider getting an average score of 256Mbps.

At that rapid rate, it would take just over two minutes to download a full HD movie – it’s also over three times quicker than the UK average.

Coming in second place was Vodafone (175Mbps) followed by BT (EE). Bottom of the speed league was TalkTalk, with this ISP scoring 94Mbps.

Sky Broadband – 113.6Mbps

Along with downloads, SpeedGo also tested all-important uploads as well. These are vital for anyone who posts large files to the web.

Top of the speed league was Vodafone with an average score of 83.6Mbps. The next closest ISP was Virgin with 47.2Mbps.

“In the 2025, the fastest broadband internet in United Kingdom was provided by Virgin Media with an average download speed of 256,5 Mb/s,” SpeedGo confirmed.

“The highest data upload speed was achieved by Vodafone (83,6 Mb/s).”
