A range of people automatically qualify for a Blue Badge, which can be used when travelling either as a driver in their own vehicle or as a passenger in someone else’s car. This includes people who are registered blind (or severely sight-impaired), those receiving the higher rate of the mobility component for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

The Government has published a detailed list of circumstances which could allow people with hidden disabilities, mobility issues or parents looking after a disabled child to qualify for a Blue Badge. Applications can be made online, although the guidance advises that individuals with a mental health condition should contact their local council directly.

This is because an assessment may be required before a Blue Badge can be issued. The guidance states: “If you have a mental condition that means you lack awareness about the danger of traffic, you cannot apply online. You should phone your local council’s Blue Badge team for a paper application form.”

The guidance further notes that those who do not automatically meet the criteria for the Blue Badge scheme may be required to complete a mobility assessment and attend an appointment with a healthcare professional, reports the Daily Record. If you’re living with a physical disability or health condition that impacts your ability to walk safely, or if you have an invisible condition such as heart disease, dementia, ADHD, epilepsy, chronic fatigue or Parkinson’s, you might qualify for a Blue Badge.
