The Rip review – Matt Damon and Ben Affleck star in Netflix action thriller | Films | Entertainment
Best buds Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have reunited on the big screen once again and this time they’re playing a pair of hardened Miami cops, working on the TNT (Tactical Narcotics Team).
New Netflix action thriller The Rip opens with the no nonsense, foul-mouthed detectives being questioned over the mysterious murder of one of their own.
Damon’s Lieutenant Dane Dumars is your classic “by the book” cop in contrast to Affleck’s Detective Sergeant JD Byrne, with his short-tempered cavalier approach to the job.
When the TNT get a tip off of cartel money hidden in a stash house, they barge their way in only to find over $20 million in cash hidden in a wall.
In a world of drug lords and police corruption, the group try to keep it together as they wonder who they can trust among their own ranks to get the exact amount out of there without any pocketing or bloodshed.
The Rip is somewhat cliché with its stereotypical characters (complete with Fast and Furious BBQ & beers on the street) and a tense situation that actually lacks, well, tension. Aside from the star power of Damon and Affleck, this feels very much like your bog-standard action B-movie, but without any edge or dark humour. The mystery of who’s bent and the third act’s action sequences just about keep one’s attention. But this is yet another forgettable Netflix movie that everyone will watch this weekend while dual-screening, only to be forgotten forever. Stick to the big screen, Matt and Ben, you’re better than this.
The Rip is streaming now on Netflix.
