Google has responded to complaints about an annoying issue affecting Android devices, with the firm advising users to disable one setting until a fix is released. It appears that some phone owners are being affected by an annoying gremlin, which means the volume buttons are not responding as they should. It has been confirmed that those using one of Android’s popular accessibility features, called Select to Speak, are experiencing this problem, which prevents audio from being adjusted and stops the buttons from snapping photos when the camera is launched.

This option, located in the settings, helps individuals with visual impairments or conditions such as dyslexia understand what is displayed on the screen by providing text and image descriptions read aloud by the phone.

Currently, once Select to Speak is turned on, it affects the volume buttons.

“We have received reports of volume keys not working as expected on Android devices that have Select to Speak, an accessibility service for users with low-vision or difficulty reading, enabled,” Google explained.

“For example, pressing the volume keys adjusts the phone’s Accessibility volume instead of the Media volume; and pressing a volume key while using the Camera does not snap a photo.”

The tech giant now advises that those affected should disable Select to Speak until a bug fix is released.

“To work around this problem, disable Select to Speak by navigating to Settings > Accessibility > Select to Speak, and then switching the Select to Speak shortcut(s) to off,” Google added.
