A “masterpiece” biographical drama film starring Jesse Eisenberg that left one fan “speechless” is streaming now in the UK. The Social Network (2010) portrays the creation of the social media giant Facebook, with Eisenberg as founder Mark Zuckerberg, as he builds what will go on to become one of the world’s most valuable companies in his Harvard dorm room.

But as its success grows, so do tensions over ownership stakes in the platform and credit for its creation. The all-star cast also includes Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake. The film was based on Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires and was directed by David Fincher with a screenplay by renowned screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. Zuckerberg and the tech company weren’t involved with the project, and the entrepreneur has rejected aspects of how the story was portrayed.

Asked about the film at a Q&A in 2014, he said: “I think the reality is that writing code and then building a product and building a company is not a glamorous enough thing to make a movie about, so you can imagine that a lot of this stuff they had to embellish or make up.

“They went out of their way in the movie to try to get some interesting details correct, like the design of the office, but on the overarching plot … they just kind of made up a bunch of stuff that I found kind of hurtful.”

The film was critically acclaimed, winning three Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing. I was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Eisenberg.

The Big Picture podcast recently ranked the film top of its 25 best movies of the century, with the drama hailed as a modern-day “Citizen Kane”.

Fans have flocked to IMDb to shower the film with praise, with one writing: “It’s been a while (ignoring rewatches) since a movie has left me as speechless as I am now.

“I’m about 10 years late to the party, but right from the first scene I was at a loss for words. The flawlessly written dialogue, the perfect editing and the shockingly raw performances made me so excited for this movie, and to say i wasn’t disappointed is an understatement.”

They said as the “the tension on screen grew, so did my admiration for this MASTERPIECE and its unparalleled pacing, captivating storyline, cinematography and soundtrack”.

Another singled out Sorkin’s writing for praise, saying: “When you see the words ‘written by Aaron Sorkin’ you know you are going to be watching something of quality and this film much like West Wing or Studio 60 follows that rule.

“Sorkin is a poet with words and his dialogue flows so fluently through every scene of this film. He loves language and uses it to make even the smallest of roles memorable. Every character is real and three dimensional and that is a testament to Sorkins writing,” whom they hailed as a “genius”.

A third, who gave the film a 10/10 said it’s “one of the best in the career of director David Fincher”.

“What an impeccable script, I’m at a loss for words to describe this incredible script. Not to mention the great performances of the actors, in addition to the excellent direction.”

The movie has a 12 certificate and contains infrequent strong language and drug use, so viewer discretion is advised.
