Your Gmail is getting a smart free upgrade that will change your inbox for good

A smart upgrade is coming to your Gmail account which should help speed up sending those daily emails along with making it easier to find old messages and sort overflowing inboxes. Google has just confirmed the launch of this major boost, with the tech giant saying it’s introducing new experiences that “transform your inbox into a more helpful, tailored, personalised command centre.”

The upgrade will begin rolling out in the US first, with other regions to follow in the coming months. Once it arrives, users will get three main changes, including a feature called AI Overviews. This lets you find messages by simply typing in a question. For example, you could also ask “Who was the plumber that gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?” with Google’s smart Intelligence not only finding the answer but also summarising the exact details you need.

AI Overviews can also help reduce the usual email noise by instantly editing entire conversations into a more concise summary of key points.

Next up, there are improved writing options and smart replies, which not only help you create emails but also assist with proofreading them.

“Say you’re coordinating a family gathering and your aunt replies asking if she should bring cake instead of pie,” Google explained.

“Suggested Replies can instantly draft an initial response in your tone and style, leaving you free to refine it before giving it your approval.”

You can also use the new Proofread feature for advanced grammar, tone and style checks so everything is polished before you send. Help Me Write and Suggested Replies are rolling out to everyone at no cost. The Proofread feature is available for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Finally, there are new AI Inbox filters which could be incredibly useful for anyone fed up with accounts that are overflowing.

With this function enabled, your most important messages will be given priority along with showing an overview of what you need to do, and when you need to do it.

Another feature called “Catch me up” provides an easy-to-view recap of all of life’s events that happen in Gmail—upcoming reservations, purchases and deliveries, cancelled or rescheduled classes, and more.

“Today, 3 billion users rely on Gmail to connect and get things done. AI has been a big part of that — from Smart Replies to AI-powered spam blocking,” Google said in post on its blog.

“But email has changed considerably since Gmail launched in 2004. With email volume at an all-time high, managing your inbox and the flow of information has become as important as the emails themselves. To help, we’re bringing Gmail into the Gemini era and making it your personal, proactive inbox assistant.”
