Fans hail ‘best ever’ James Bond film and it’s on ITV tonight | Films | Entertainment

Tonight, ITV is screening what many consider the finest James Bond film ever made, starring the actor widely regarded as the definitive 007.

Dr. No, which premiered in 1963, features Sean Connery – hailed by devotees as ‘the perfect Bond’ – alongside Ursula Andress, Joseph Wiseman, Jack Lord, Anthony Dawson, Zena Marshall, John Kitzmiller and Eunice Gayson.

The film that kickstarted the legendary Bond franchise sees Agent 007 (Sean Connery) square off against the enigmatic Dr. No, a scientific mastermind determined to sabotage America’s space programme.

With catastrophe looming, Bond travels to Jamaica, where he crosses paths with the stunning Honey Ryder (Ursula Andress), before confronting his adversary at a sprawling island stronghold.

Despite being over six decades old, the picture continues to garner acclaim from modern audiences, with cinephiles maintaining it ‘sets up the Bond franchise perfectly’.

One reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes said: “Dr. No still pops with the cool swagger that launched Bond into icon status. Connery is effortlessly compelling, the Caribbean setting is gorgeous, and Wiseman’s villain quietly steals scenes. Decades later, it remains a slick, stylish, and genuinely fun spy thriller a classic for a reason.”

Another added: “No other actor says “Bond. James Bond” as well as Connery.”, reports the Mirror.

“1st James Bond introduction film of the series. Exciting and thrilling with a bit of British humour,” said one viewer.

Another fan wrote: “A fantastic movie that sets up Mr. Bond with the perfect image to continue the sequel. This movie primarily focuses on building Bond’s image which makes sense given it is the first of the successful series. He is portrayed as a charming spy often overpowered while on duty by his ever lasting want/need for women.

“Certain aspects of the movie can be improved, some areas of it could make more sense but ultimately this movie is what got people interested in franchise. A lack of action is its biggest weakness making the movie less appealing to action lovers who are used to action in todays spy movies, such as Mission Impossible and the modern 007. However again, this movie primarily focuses on building Bond’s character.

“Sean Connery was an absolutely perfect fit for this role and I’d argue his best acting ever was seen in this movie. Beyond Sean Connery Ursula Andress is the greatest Bond girl in history. Overall this is one of the best movies ever in the franchises history.”

Another review said: “Bond, James Bond. Pleased to meet you, 007. Connery was born to play the role and he’s absolutely perfect. Great start to the longest-running film series in cinematic history.

“The one that started it all. It’s amazing that they got it right on the first go with almost everything being pitch perfect,” praised another enthusiast.

Dr. No airs on Wednesday 7 January at 9pm on ITV4.
