‘Masterpiece’ 90s action horror based on classic book now on Netflix | Films | Entertainment
A “masterpiece” adventure thriller directed by Steven Spielberg is streaming now in the UK. Jurassic Park (1993) is set on a remote island near Costa Rica, where John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), a wealthy venture capitalist, has created a wildlife park home to long-extinct dinosaurs brought back to life by a team of scientists.
After one of the handlers is killed by a dinosaur, a small group, including three experts, arrives to assess the park’s safety. Among them are palaeontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill), paleobotanist Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and chaotician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum). Lex and Tim Murphy, Hammond’s grandchildren, also arrive at the same time. But when power at the park is shutdown due to an unforeseen incident and the security systems are compromised, it triggers a desperate attempt to escape from a lost world of prehistoric monsters.
The movie, which incorporates elements of horror and science fiction, was written by David Koepp and Michael Crichton and based on the latter’s best-selling 1990 novel.
The film proved to be yet another huge blockbuster for Spielberg, known for his work on the Indiana Jones franchise, E.T., and Schindler’s List, and has spawned a number of sequels.
The groundbreaking CGI used to create the dinosaurs was a revelation, and it still has the power to thrill and exite more than three decades after it was released.
Fans have flocked to IMDb to shower the film with praise, with one writing: “Even though it was adapted from a book, this unique story was destined to become an incredible film.
“Great casting, decent acting, great special effects, beautiful and perfect score by John Williams, incredible directing.”
Another said: “I don’t remember a film I felt so original like Jurassic Park- in story, execution, visual effects-almost every aspect- even after watching today’s movies that simply aim at an exhibition of technological advances instead of telling a story as convincing as this. A true masterpiece….!!”
A fourth said it inspired a whole generation to “pursue the dreams of discovery, the dreams that something bigger and incredible could be achieved just with the power of curiosity and imagination”.
“Forever grateful to the genius minds of Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg for this wonderful and eternal movie,” they added.
The film has 12A certificate and contains moderate threat, violence, and bloody images, so viewer discretion is advised.
Jurassic Park returned to Netflix in the UK on December 31. It’s also available to stream on Amazon Prime, and buy or rent on various other platforms.
