From London’s renowned Winter Wonderland to intimate Yuletide gatherings, there’s something to suit all tastes – and occasionally it’s the hidden gems that create the most memorable experiences.

Neil Atkinson, proprietor of Luxury Group Stay, has revealed his favourite picks of overlooked Christmas markets that deliver authentic seasonal charm without the heaving masses found in Manchester, Birmingham or Edinburgh.

He said: “Some of the best Christmas events are tucked away in smaller spa towns and cathedral cities. They’re often more intimate, better value, and filled with authentic local craftsmanship rather than mass-produced souvenirs.”

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market – Hampshire

Neil champions Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas market, declaring: “Set in the shadow of the magnificent Winchester Cathedral, this market has become a southern secret for those who want European-style charm without leaving the UK.”

Running from 21 November to 22 December, Winchester’s market offers visitors the chance to purchase handcrafted presents, artisan cuisine, and premium crafts, all beneath sparkling illuminations that transform the Cathedral Close into a festive tableau worthy of a Christmas card.

With the cathedral choir delivering multiple performances throughout this timeframe, it represents pure seasonal magic.

Worcester Victorian Christmas Fayre – Worcestershire

From 4 to 7 December, Worcester steps back in time for the Victorian Christmas Fayre, with its streets teeming with merchants dressed in Victorian attire, a traditional carousel and the scent of roasting chestnuts filling the air.

Visitors can look forward to exploring stalls from local craftspeople offering handmade goods, street food and festive drinks, while carol singers and street performers keep the atmosphere buzzing.

Durham Christmas Festival – County Durham

Neil said: “Few settings are as striking as Durham Cathedral at Christmas.” He recommended the Durham Christmas Festival, which takes place over just three days, from 5 to 7 December.

This short festival includes a Craft and Producers’ Marquee on Palace Green, a bustling outdoor market and a Children’s Lantern Parade that winds its way up to the cathedral.

Canterbury Christmas Market – Kent

Running from 12 November to 24 December, Canterbury offers cathedral-city charm with one of the South East’s most picturesque markets.

Visitors can expect over 170 stalls selling handcrafted gifts, candles, crafts and festive food, all set against the backdrop of the city’s historic cathedral lit up for the season.

The Canterbury Christmas market strikes a perfect balance between atmosphere and size, showcasing impressive local craftsmanship and offering plenty of family-friendly activities.

Harrogate Christmas Fayre – North Yorkshire

The Harrogate Christmas Fayre, taking place from 5th to 14th December, caters to those who prefer a more leisurely pace to enjoy the holiday season. With around 40 festively decorated chalets spread across the spa town, the Harrogate Christmas Fayre offers a compact, stylish and inherently festive experience.
