‘Cinematic masterpiece’ fans insist is ‘endlessly rewatchable’ | Films | Entertainment
A highly praised biopic, described as ‘one of the best films ever’, is now available on Prime Video. The drama, which was originally released in 2010, bagged three Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Original Score.
But the accolades didn’t stop there, the film also earned esteemed director David Fincher a nomination for the Best Director award. We are, of course, talking about The Social Network. Based on Ben Mezrich’s 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires, the film charts the creation of social media giant Facebook.
Audiences watch Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg as he embarks on a project that eventually becomes the worldwide social networking site, with help from his mate Eduardo Saverin. However, when the site takes off, Mark finds himself facing legal action from twins who believe he pinched their idea, and from Facebook’s co-founder Eduardo.
Despite its relatively straightforward storyline, the drama is elevated by a star-studded cast portraying its occasionally unsympathetic characters. Jesse Eisenberg stars as Mark Zuckerberg, alongside Spider Man star Andrew Garfield as his business associate Eduardo, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Eisenberg’s performance was met with critical acclaim, earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Leading Actor. While he missed out on the Academy Award to Colin Firth for The King’s Speech, his portrayal continues to garner acclaim more than 15 years on.
The supporting cast was equally impressive, featuring Rooney Mara (Women Talking), Oscar nominee Justin Timberlake, and Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name) in key roles. With such a distinguished ensemble and Fincher at the helm, The Social Network unsurprisingly earned widespread critical acclaim.
The biographical drama secured an exceptional 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics declaring: “Impeccably scripted, beautifully directed, and filled with fine performances, The Social Network is a riveting, ambitious example of modern filmmaking at its finest.”
Audiences shared this enthusiasm, with one viewer declaring: “The Social Network is a modern cinematic masterpiece,” continuing: “And the cast? OMG – every single actor is outstanding. Each character comes alive with remarkable depth, making the film almost overwhelmingly immersive. […] Dialogue, acting, and direction at the highest level. The Social Network is simply unparalleled.”
Another cinema-goer enthused: “The Social Network is one of the best movies I’ve seen. The story is really engaging, and the acting is top-notch.Jesse Eisenberg does a great job showing both the smart and awkward sides of Mark Zuckerberg, and Andrew Garfield adds a lot of emotion as Eduardo.”
A third viewer commented: “The Social Network is one of those movies that sneaks up on you with just how endlessly rewatchable it is. I’m always in for a biopic, and with Fincher at the helm, you know you’re in steady, razor-sharp hands-he proves once again why he’s one of my favourite directors.”
The Social Network is streaming now on Prime Video.
