The gorgeous little city just like Bath but without the tourists and much cheaper | Europe | Travel
A picturesque European town, full of historic spas and emerald forest views, has often been compared to Bath. Nestled in a valley where the Tepla River flows into the Ohre River, sits the stunning city of Karlovy Vary. Along the western side of the Czech Republic, the spa city is known for its hot mineral spring water which some believe has proven healing effects.
Known as Europe’s largest open-air salon, the city’s distinct architecture reflects its golden age as an 18th-century spa destination. With glamorous buildings and fresh spring water, it’s no wonder Karlovy Vary has attracted numerous European royals.
The city is often likened to the world-famous Roman spa town of Bath, in Somerset, after Unesco named it as one of the 11 “great spa towns of Europe.” Across Karlovy Vary, hot mineral water between 30-73°C splashes out from several springs. The water is said to cleanse different parts of the body, with Mill Spring helping the liver and pancreas and the Charles IV Spring for the kidneys. The Telegraph reports many Czechs visiting the city’s spas even have three-week stays covered by their health insurance.
Imperial Spa stands out as one of Karlovy Vary’s largest and most richly equipped. The two-storey state-of-the-art building resembles a grand theatre with historic waiting rooms and luxurious halls. A one-hour tour offers an insight into the rich artistic design and wealth status of the city in the 18th century. The spa offered more than 100 baths and a unique system of transporting peat for therapeutic baths. In one day, the baths could serve nearly 2,000 people.
It’s not only the spas which are impressive, the elegant Diana Lookout Tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding emerald valleys and spa forests. From 35 metres above ground, after climbing the 150 steps, visitors can observe as far out as 70km. While the city is breathtaking from above, it’s even possible to see the stunning Ore Mountains range that lies along the Czech-German border.
With a population of under 50,000 people, it’s a tranquil getaway for anyone wanting a more relaxing holiday. Tourists enjoy admiring the historical sites, spending a day of wellness in one of the city’s modern spas and even horse-drawn carriage rides along the colourful streets. It’s an ideal holiday on a budget, flights from London Stansted start at just £38 for a round trip and it takes only two hours to get there.
