Just under an hour’s drive from Derby, nestled in the  Peak District, lies the idyllic village of Monyash, offering a perfect winter retreat complete with scenic walks, a cosy puband comfort food. 

Monyash is a civil parish tucked away in the breathtaking Peak District, just five miles west of Bakewell. This hidden treasure is less frequented than its neighbouring towns, providing a peaceful haven with vast expanses of countryside to explore right on its doorstep.

The quaint limestone  village is situated at the head of the serene Lathkill Dale, enveloped by stunning landscapes. The area boasts excellent walking trails, with the Limestone Way passing through the village, offering routes in all directions.

The Monyash Walk, spanning four miles over gates, steps, stiles and squeeze stiles, takes between one and two hours to complete. Although the terrain can be uneven in places as you traverse the dales, there are no steep ascents or descents, allowing you to fully appreciate the unparalleled views.

Another must-visit natural attraction in the area is the historic site of Arbor Low, a Neolithic henge monument, dramatically set within the moorland. Here lies a bank and ditch, surrounded by up to 50 fallen whitestone slabs, encircling a central cove.

This unique feature is only found in some of the most sacred sites, and it’s located near Gib Hill, a significant burial mound. It’s thought to date back to somewhere between 3,000 and 2,500 BC, making it one of the most intricate and awe-inspiring prehistoric monuments in Peaks.

“All the surrounding alignments can be seen at various points right onto the horizon demonstrating impressively the ancients knowledge of movements and what energetic properties each cycle brought to the seasons and the life as a whole.”

The village centre features a green with the remnants of an old market cross, signifying the town’s historical importance in mining and agriculture. Here you’ll also discover the striking church of St Leonard, with its graceful spire perched atop a tower, which serves as a local landmark amidst the rural landscape.

After a day of sightseeing, when it’s time to put your feet up, Monyash boasts a quaint country pub, The Bulls Head, serving traditional British fare. Just next door, for those fancying a cuppa, there’s a selection of sweet delights available at The Old Smithy Tearooms and Restaurant for a relaxed lunchtime treat.
