If you’re one of thousands of Brits heading away for some winter sun, you’re likely prepared for airport security. You know the rules for your liquids in your carry-on; your passport is ready, and any necessary visas are sorted. However, there is one little-known airport security rule that could see you turned away — and it’s nothing to do with the contents of your bag.

Travel experts at WildPack American Summer Camps are warning travellers to be aware of this little-known law, which, if broken, could result in being banned from boarding. If you’ve been busy preparing for your flight and have let your phone go dead, you could be in big trouble. 

Travel expert Jamie Fraser said: “Many travellers are unaware that airport security now operates under stricter guidelines regarding electronic devices. If security personnel cannot switch on your phone to conduct necessary checks, they have the authority to deem the device, or you, a security risk.”

To prove that your phone will turn on, airport staff may ask you to switch it on and show them.

If your battery has died, the device is broken or won’t switch on, then you won’t be allowed to take it on the flight.

Travel advice on GOV.UK reads: “Make sure your electronic devices are charged before you travel. If your device does not switch on when requested, you will not be allowed to take it onto the aircraft.”

Most travellers will not be asked to do this, but it can happen, and it’s essential to be prepared. 

Jamie said, “While it might seem extreme, these regulations are in place for everyone’s safety. A non-functioning device raises suspicion and can lead to significant delays and potential denial of boarding. In some cases, security might even confiscate the device for further inspection.”
