Quaint village with ‘amazing’ fish and chips is seaside resort without the sea | UK | Travel

Tucked away in the undulating hills of Derbyshire there’s a charming village that mirrors the allure of a perfect seaside town – minus the sea.

This vibrant little town nestled in the Peak District is a favourite day trip destination for families across the Midlands, offering a coastal-like experience. Matlock Bath has been a popular spot since the 17th century and was even christened ‘little Switzerland‘ by Lord Byron due to its steep hillsides and breathtaking views.

These days, it feels like you’re at the coast, with an abundance of  fish and chip shops, sweet shops, ice cream parlours and, naturally, arcade games. It provides all the elements of a seaside town, sans the wind and sandy children, replaced instead with lush greenery, the flowing River Derwent and numerous walking trails.

For family outings, the area boasts both educational attractions and those purely designed for enjoyment. The Matlock Bath Aquarium and the Peak District Mining Museum are both within walking distance for those seeking a respite from the delightful sugary treats the village has to offer.

For a tranquil addition to your day trip, the renowned Lovers Walk is a must. This idyllic riverside stroll offers stunning views of cliffside buildings, vibrant floral displays and a park for a leisurely stopover.

And when the weather permits, you can hire a rowing boat and experience Matlock Bath from the water itself. What truly sets this village apart are its culinary delights – particularly its vast array of fish and chip shops, all conveniently located on one street.

With up to 10 establishments serving the nation’s favourite dish, you’re spoilt for choice. However, there seems to be one clear winner among visitors.

According to TripAdvisor, Tucker Fish and Chips holds the title of the best-rated chippy in Matlock Bath, boasting an impressive overall review rating of 4.5. One glowing review reads: “We go to Whitby every year, and as anyone will tell you, it can’t be beaten for fish and chips. Well, hold up.

“Because this little place is on par with the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Staff are amazing, the food is absolutely fantastic with melt-in-your-mouth batter, and the curry sauce is top-notch. If you’re in Matlock, make sure this is your first choice for fish and chips because you won’t be disappointed.”

Other chippies along the way include Matlock favourites such as Kostas Fish Bar, Route 66 Promenade Fish Bar and Taste of The Waves. But they’re not alone; nestled amongst these are a variety of sweet shops offering traditional British confectionery, ice creams and other scrumptious desserts.

Along the promenade, you’ll discover Derwent Amusement Centre, home to all the village’s arcade games, from classic two-penny machines to air hockey, claw machines and even an adults-only gambling section. Children could while away hours here, whatever the weather, after indulging in the irresistible sweet treats the village provides.

Located just a mile and a half south of the slightly larger town of Matlock, Matlock Bath offers a delightful getaway that’s still within easy reach of the pubs and high-street shops its neighbour boasts. Many choose to embark on a pub crawl from Matlock down to Matlock Bath, hopping on the train between the two charming locations.
