Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz ‘in talks’ for The Mummy 4 | Films | Entertainment
Back in 1999, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz starred in The Mummy, an Indiana Jones-style remake of the 1932 horror classic, written and directed by Stephen Sommers.
Following the action adventure’s success, the pair returned as Rick and Evy with their 8-year-old son Alex in 2001’s The Mummy Returns.
Set 10 years later in 1933, the family once again take on Arnold Vosloo’s resurrected Imhotep and also Dwayne Johnson’s Scorpion King, who had his own prequel spin-off a year later.
Then came 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor ,set in 1946, which was only produced by Sommers and was not as fondly remembered.
Weisz didn’t reprise Evy, being recast with Maria Bello in this adventure with a Chinese Mummy. Meanwhile, Alex was played by Luke Ford, who was just 12 years younger than Fraser. At the time, the latter was signed on for three more movies, but The Mummy 4 was cancelled. Instead, Universal rebooted the franchise with Tom Cruise, in what was supposed to kick off the Dark Universe that never happened. But now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, both Fraser and Weisz are in talks for a new Mummy movie, which would reunite the pair 25 years on.
Scream and Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are set to helm The Mummy 4. While, original producer Sean Daniel is back on board. One rumour is that the new film will disregard the events of the third movie. Perhaps John Hannah’s Jonathan and Oded Fehr’s Ardeth Bay could return too, alongside the original Mummy and The Rock’s Scorpion King?
