‘Intense’ thriller with Harry Potter star ‘steals the show’ | Films | Entertainment
A thriller starring a Harry Potter actor, perfect for fans of The White Lotus, has just landed on Netflix.
A Bigger Splash, directed by Luca Guadagnino, was recently added to the streaming giant’s ever-evolving library.
The film, originally released in 2015, is considered the second part of what Guadagnino calls his ‘Desire trilogy’, nestled between I Am Love and Call Me By Your Name.
The plot unfolds in a secluded villa on the tiny Italian island of Pantelleria. Here, world-renowned rock singer Marianne Lane is holidaying with her filmmaker partner, Paul.
Marianne is recuperating from surgery that has left her voiceless, communicating only through signs and occasional whispers.
Paul, meanwhile, is battling alcohol addiction. Their peaceful getaway is abruptly disrupted by unexpected guests, including Marianne’s ex and Paul’s mentor Harry, a flamboyant music producer, reports the Mirror.
He brings along his daughter, who claims to be in her early twenties. The uninvited guests make themselves at home in the villa, with Harry testing his host’s patience by inviting friends over as if it were his own house and taking everyone out to various sights and festivities. However, Marianne finds herself irresistibly drawn to him once more.
A Bigger Splash features an impressive ensemble cast, with Ralph Fiennes, recognised for his roles in the Harry Potter franchise and Oscar-winning film Conclave, taking the lead. He is accompanied by Marvel actress Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts from The Old Guard and Amsterdam.
Dakota Johnson, famous for Fifty Shades of Grey, also appears. The film received largely positive feedback from critics when it premiered, achieving a remarkable 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Numerous reviews highlighted the stunning use of exotic locations and their impact on screen. This element has drawn comparisons to the popular HBO drama The White Lotus, which similarly combined gripping storylines with lavish, sun-soaked settings.
One critic observed: “A Bigger Splash is gorgeously shot, taking pure advantage of its location to embody the story it wants to tell..”
Echoing this sentiment, another assessment noted: “A simmering visual experience that never lets the characters or the viewer relax into the paradise so vividly shown on screen.”
Several critics singled out Fiennes for particular acclaim. As one reviewer wrote: “It’s Fiennes… that proverbially steals the show. Once again showing the kind of indispensable range of a master, the actor portrays Harry as a raging bull of spark, insecurity, charm and manic depression.”
Viewers have been singing the film’s praises online. One fan wrote: “Intriguing absorbing drama about beautiful people with souls set on a Sicilian island with a top notch Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton. You can’t take your eyes off of Swinton and Fiennes who recapture the abandon of The Rolling Stones, Emotional Rescue and all that ambiance that their music created.”
Another enthusiast commented: “I love all the complexity in this movie, it’s beautiful and intense. I would like to watch over and over again and I love all the actress also the strong character that Tilda Swinton had.”
A Bigger Splash is streaming on Netflix.
