I visited 6 new countries this year – there’s 1 I’d go back to in 2026 | Travel News | Travel
I visited six new countries in 2025, and each of them had a unique charm. I didn’t venture beyond Europe this year, but I really did not feel the need to do so. While some spots in Europe suffer from overtourism, where tourists aren’t feeling very welcome in recent years, I went to some underrated spots that proved to be just as enjoyable. Popular destinations like Barcelona and Tenerife saw protests against overtourism taking place. So, I avoided places like this. In fact, I avoided Spain altogether this year.
I managed to squeeze in eight countries this year, including my homeland of Ireland, as well as Germany, which is one of my favourite countries to return to. But I also ventured into six new countries. And there is one I can’t wait to return to, which is actually quite surprising. Before I visited, I didn’t expect there to be much going on. But I managed to fill my days with some pretty wonderful experiences.
This year, the six new countries I visited were Belgium, Czechia, Austria, Greece, Romania and France. I was surprised to find out that Belgium is the one I am most looking forward to seeing again.
I got the EuroStar from London to Brussels in April, kicking off my two-week interrailing journey around some exciting European cities. From the markets of Prague and the architecture of Vienna, to the culinary delightfulness of Paris, there were almost too many highlights of this trip to list.
But Belgium really grabbed me. Brussels itself is a beautiful city. I enjoyed its laid-back vibe. I did a lot of walking around, a lot of snapping of photos, and a lot of eating. The Belgian waffles I enjoyed were unmatched.
Belgium, despite its relatively small size, has a lot going for it. When I was there, I enjoyed a stunning day trip to Ghent. This is a tiny city, but it is one of my favourites in all of Europe.
Ghent is home to some lovely canals, like a smaller version of Amsterdam without the massive crowds. Plus, there are some amazing buildings here as well as stunning cafes where a relaxing afternoon can be spent.
I had three days in Belgium in total before I jumped on a sleeper train to head to Prague. And Belgium really captivated me. Considering it’s a mere 70 minutes away from the UK, I’m surprised more folks in Britain aren’t taking advantage of this culturally and historically rich place.
While Belgium is the one I am most eager to return to, other countries did catch a piece of my heart this year. My experience in France was limited to Paris, so I definitely plan to explore more of this neighbour of the UK.
Meanwhile, Austria treated me to interesting history, beautiful architecture and some seriously delicious food. My trip to Bucharest, Romania, was probably my least favourite of the bunch, but I would be willing to return to Romania to explore regions like Transylvania.
In order, these are how I rank the new countries I visited this year, based on how excited I am to return:
- Belgium
- Greece
- Austria
- France
- Czechia
- Romania
