English city named ‘most beautiful’ to visit in autumn — not London | Travel News | Travel
For a stunning autumn holiday you don’t have to travel far. In fact, some of the most beautiful destinations in the world are right here in the UK. London and Bath are popular choices, as is the charming city of Edinburgh in Scotland.
However, according to research from London North England Railway (LNER) Durham is the most popular English city to visit. The research analysed historical climate records, local tree species, and photo evidence to estimate when leaves reach their most vibrant shades. Every city they studied was given an “Autumn Beauty” score based on the richness and consistency of its reds, oranges, and yellows.
Durham located in North East England, slightly south of Newcastle received an almost perfect score of 92/100.
This charming city has something for everyone. From history lovers to ramblers and everything in between, Durham is the perfect weekend break. The castle and cathedral are dedicated UNESCO World Heritage sites and eagle eyed visitors may recognise it.
The quadrangle was used as a filming location for the Harry Potter films, serving as the outdoor space of Hogwarts.
With crisp autumn days bearing down across the UK, Durham also offers the perfect walks. It’s a small city so you can walk its streets with ease but there’s also paths along the River Wear around the centre of the city.
If it’s too chilly to be outside, you can explore the Oriental Museum or Ushaw Historic House.
The museum spans everything from Ancient Egypt to modern China and makes for a fascinating day out, whereas Ushaw House is a resplendent home and garden.
Durham is also great to visit because of its people. Frequently named as one of the friendliest cities in the UK, so it’s easy to stop and chat with locals – and they’ll likely have some more great recommendations for you.
