‘Magical’ village feels like ‘walking into a film set’ | UK | Travel
The traditional fishing village found in North Cornwall is the home of a popular British TV programme, and the area itself feels like something out of a movie set.
Port Isaac is a quintessentially British coastal village in the ever-popular Cornwall, with charming cottages that overlook the picture-perfect harbour. In fact, the area is so picturesque that it appears on screen in the series Doc Martin, with Martin Clunes playing the leading role.
Since 2004 many recognise the village as ‘Port Wenn’, its fictional name in the BBC series, and flock to the streets to catch a glimpse of its real-life beauty. But its significance doesn’t stop there, as the town’s rich fishing heritage dates all the way back to the 14th century.
The pretty port has a deep connection to the sea, and fishing continues to play a big part in the local community. Of course these elements make it a popular spot for visitors throughout the summer months, but those wanting fewer crowds and less intense heat couldn’t choose a better time to go than right now.
Alternatively, those looking to visit outside of summer should also consider going to see the Port Isaac Sea Shanty Festival, an annual event that takes place in the port, with live music and traditional sea shanty performances. While it may be small in size, the village has plenty to offer.
At the heart of Port Isaac is its charming harbour where local fishermen bring in their catch, day in day out as they have for centuries. Close by is a slipway to the beach, which offers serene sands, rock pools and, if you’re lucky, a couple of sea creatures hiding close by.
A TripAdvisor review reads: “Little has changed in the five decades since I was last here. That’s the uniqueness of these Cornish fishing villages; they are nestled into the coves, and there is not much one can do to change it unless you rebuild the entire village.”
For tourists keen to see the TV spots, right by the harbour is the starting point of the Doc Martin Tour. Many partake in a guided walk through the village’s various filming locations, pointing out favourite spots from the beloved show – including Doc’s house, the school and plenty of behind-the-scenes facts to learn.
One visitor took to TripAdvisor to share their experience, writing: “The Doc Martin Tour was a delightful experience for our family. Walking through the charming village where the series was filmed felt magical.
“The guide shared fascinating stories, behind-the-scenes facts The beautiful scenery, coastal views, and warm local atmosphere made the day unforgettable. It’s a perfect blend of television history and Cornwall’s natural beauty.
The charming village is also filled with cosy galleries, souvenir shops and quaint stores selling local crafts and pottery. Local businesses come together to showcase their unique makes, and tourists are keen to grab something to remember their special visit by.
With plenty of walks on offer, including the South West Coast Path, you can take a stroll along the coastline or even drive further afield as you make your way outside and around Port Isaac.
The breathtaking scenery doesn’t stop there, as to the east of the village you can escape to the tranquil retreat of Port Gaverne with its sheltered beach.
