iPhone 17 v iPhone Air v iPhone 17 Pro – the one I recommend might surprise you
There are a swathe of all new iPhones devices to choose from with Apple’s latest and greatest call makers now officially on sale in stores across the UK. The latest line-up includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max along with something we’ve never seen before. It’s called the iPhone Air and offers super skinny design that’s Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date.
In fact, this wafer-thin call maker is just 5.6mm thick – that’s less than the 5.8mm Galaxy S25 Edge. There’s now an iPhone for everyone, but the model I feel most people should buy is the iPhone 17.
This device got a little overshadowed during Apple’s keynote in California, with everyone rushing to see the Air and new Pro devices, which now feature a refreshed design and striking Cosmic Orange colour.
The iPhone 17 might look very similar to last year, and certainly isn’t as eye-catching as the Air or Pro models, but there’s a lot going on in 2025.
This device now gets a better 6.3-inch ProMotion screen which is bigger than before. ProMotion is something we’ve been asking for as it finally brings a 120Hz refresh rate to the standard model.
That means owners get a more silky smooth experience when scrolling through websites, playing games and more. The dual-lens cameras are also updated this year and offer two 48MP Fusion lenses for improved images. No, the iPhone 17 can’t match the iPhone 17 Pro’s triple-lens snapper, but it’s more than good enough for most.
Other extras include 256GB of storage as standard—up from 128GB on the iPhone 16.
Battery life is extended, it gets tougher Ceramic Shield Glass 2 – which should help stop it getting smashed – and it’s powered by the quicker A19 processor.
You get all of that for the same £799 price as when the iPhone 16 launched 12 months ago.
There’s no question that the Air will have everyone talking when it show it off down the pub but it costs £200 more than the iPhone 17 and has a smaller battery and single-lens camera.
Of course, the Pro is still the ultimate iPhone, and the new models get that smart new look, blisteringly quick A19 Pro chip and impressive camera system.
The Pro and Pro Max also gets a new vapour chamber inside which stops things getting hot when placed under pressure and they offers very long battery life.
The Pro is hard to fault but they start from £300 more than the iPhone 17 and they are probably too powerful for most.
As you can read in our full iPhone 17 review, this device fixes all the gripes found on the iPhone 16. It’s the best iPhone for most people, and that’s why I wholeheartedly recommend it.
