A picturesque town in Cotswolds known for its medieval bridge and impressive church is among the best places to visit in autumn. Known as the “gateway” to the Cotswolds, Burford is a popular spot among the tourists.

Situated between Oxford and Chelmsford, the town boasts of gorgeous stone built houses, the three-arched medieval bridge and a busy high street. The town has local schools, shops, pubs and lots of greenery that attracts plenty of visitors across the world. Hello! recently compiled a list of best towns and villages to visit in Cotsowolds this autumn, and Burford claimed the top spot.

Travellers can walk up Burford Hill to experience the town’s stunning scenery. The area is lined with the stone cottages which is one of the most photegraphed areas.

The Tolsey Museum in the town is one of the most popular spot to visit where you can find all about the local history, culture and the industry. The musuem is open to all between April and December and doesn’t require any tickets.

Visitors can explore its alleyways and side streets which are next to a set of medieval almshouses and St John’s Church.

Visit Burford adds: “This fine church is a real gem with many interesting memorials charting some of Burford’s great families including one to Henry VIII’s barber-surgeon, which includes one of the earliest depictions of Native Americans and the ostentatious Tanfield tomb.”

At the High Street, you can find cute home and gift shops, perfect to end your visit in the town. England’s oldest chemist, Reavley Chemist is also placed on the street. It was opened in 1734 and has been serving to the residents since then.

One of the users wrote on TripAdvisor forum: “No trip to the Cotswolds would be complete without visiting the charming town of Burford. Lots of lovely little shops to visit. Beautiful architecture and lush, green surroundings.

“If I close my eyes, I can still smell the air and the lilting tweets of native birds. Burford transports you back to a simpler time, while retaining its’ natural beauty and charm.”

Another user chimed in: “Burford is a beautiful town in the Cotswolds situated on a hill and its pretty side streets. Stand at the top of the hill and you can see down its Main Street to the bridge over the River Windrush. There are quaint little shops and cafes. A really lovely place to spend a few hours or spend the night.”

A third user wrote: “Burford is easy to get to, set in the gorgeous Cotswolds countryside with plenty of pubs and restaurants. The town itself is pretty and has a good range of country shops where you can buy things for your fireplace or country tweeds and so on. Ideal place for a short break to recharge your batteries.”
