Brno, the Czech Republic’s second city, might not be as famous as Prague, but its allure is undeniable. While I had the pleasure of visiting in September,  enjoying its sun-drenched squares and lively atmosphere, local guides and business owners painted a picture of a truly magical Christmas wonderland. They described a city that, during the festive period, transforms into a warm, glowing haven, and it’s this transformation that makes Brno a better choice for a holiday break than its more bustling counterpart.

This recognition wasn’t just a local secret. The Christmas Cities Network, an association supported by the European Parliament, named Brno the European Capital of Christmas 2024, praising the city for its high-quality festivities and describing it as a “creative Christmas gem.” Unlike Prague’s notoriously crowded Old Town Square, which can feel less like a holiday market and more like a human traffic jam, Brno offers a more intimate and authentic experience.

Brno is the historical capital of the eastern Czech region of Moravia, known for its distinct wine culture and rich folk traditions. There’s no need to rush around Brno, with everything being just a 15-minute leisurely walk within the city centre. 

The dynamic and lively náměstí Svobody (Freedom Square) is a central hub year-round, but particularly during the festive season. In addition to the Christmas tree with a collection box and a wish bell, you’ll see the Christmas tram go by here.

The Winter bar is a popular centrepiece of the local Christmas market. It offers punches, cider, and ginger drinks.

On Radnická Street, which connects Freedom Square and the Cabbage Market, you’ll also find glass city modules at the Old City Hall. These modules feature a range of original gifts as part of the December Design Days. 

The city’s rich culture and heritage, which I discovered during my summer visit, shine even brighter against the backdrop of Christmas.

At the Vegetable Market, a charming central spot adored by locals in Brno, you’ll find traditional and artisanal produce. During the festive period, a Christmas tree dominates the scene.

According to the European Capital of Christmas collective, the address houses a stage open Monday through Sunday with a live music programme, always from 5pm to 10pm. To promote a family atmosphere, children and pupils from kindergartens, primary schools, and art schools, as well as professional entertainers, take to the stage.

The market hosts around 100 stands over Christmas, offering hand-crafted products such as ceramics, bath salts, and Christmas decorations.

“You will meet blacksmiths, candle makers, soap makers, bell makers, and bookbinders, whose products will certainly be a nice gift under the tree”, says the European Capital of Christmas collective.

Outside of the main centre, the medieval Špilberk Castle, with its commanding views of the city, and the stunning Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, are a must-see.

The Christmas markets will return to the heart of Brno from November 20 to December 30 this year, but its bars and eateries are open year-round.

Brno is home to a collection of celebrated cocktail bars that offer a theatrical twist on a night out. The Lidi z baru (which translates to “People from the Bar”) is a creative collective and business group responsible for some of Brno’s most acclaimed and innovative hospitality venues.

Chief among them is Super Panda Circus, a hidden speakeasy known for its quirky, immersive themes, elaborate drinks, and a sense of adventure that makes ordering a cocktail a part of the show.
