The overlooked Spanish town 1.5 hours from Barcelona with £2.40 beers | Travel News | Travel

Brits looking for a late-summer holiday might consider different options while cities across northern Europe still enjoy pleasant weather and the southern hotspots start to cool down. For those aiming for the latter, one little-known gem presents ideal conditions, boasting picture-perfect beaches and surprisingly budget-friendly beers. And with temperatures reported to be lingering around 20C in September, it’s an ideal destination for those looking to escape the intense summer heat of larger tourist hubs like Majorca and Marbella.

Nestled in the stunning Costa Brava region of Catalonia, Llafranc is a refreshingly authentic spot with awe-inspiring coastal beauty and a genuine Catalonian atmosphere. For even more charm, one of the standout features of this ancient fishing village is the Hotel Llafranc, which has hosted Rock Hudson, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Salvador Dalí, and Ernest Hemingway.

Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital and engagement at eurochange, said: “Llafranc, a coastal town in the Costa Brava is a great alternative option for those who love Majorca’s beach resorts.

“Boasting a picturesque crescent-shaped beach with crystal-clear waters, it is the ideal relaxing swimming and sunbathing spot.

“The town is also part of the Camí de Ronda, a coastal path that offers stunning views of the Mediterranean and connects to quaint nearby towns like Calella de Palafrugell, which are also well worth a visit.

“If you’re a foodie, Llafranc is a must-visit too. The coastal town is known for its delicious fresh seafood restaurants and traditional Catalan dishes.”

On top of that, the expert says the average beer price here is €3.00 (£2.39), and meals are typically €14.50 (£11.55), ensuring you can indulge without breaking the bank.

With direct return flights to Girona from cities like Birmingham, Manchester, and Belfast starting from just £62 in August, the town is as easy to reach as it is to fall in love with.

For beach lovers, the main beach, Platja Gran, is the most convenient option. This large, sandy stretch offers a range of amenities, including beach bars and restaurants, making it a perfect spot for families looking for a laid-back day by the sea.

But for those who want a more intimate experience, the nearby Llafranc beach is an excellent alternative, best for windsurfing and quiet water activities like kayaking and snorkelling.

Lastly, Calella de Palafrugell has beautiful views across the turquoise waters, with whitewashed buildings and fishing boats pulled up on the sand adding to its allure.
