Couple visited UK’s ‘quietest’ airport and were left ‘surprised’ | Travel News | Travel

A couple were left “surprised” when they embarked on a flight from England’s “quietest” airport, Humberside. Travel blogger Molly Thompson and her partner Tom decided to take a flight from the Kirmington-based airport, which is known as the “quietest” commercial airport in the country, serving around 136,000 people each year.

This is a stark contrast to Heathrow, the busiest airport, which welcomed 83.9 million passengers in 2024. Despite living just 20 miles away in Yorkshire, 25-year-old Molly had never flown from the small airport before.

In a YouTube video, she said: “On first impressions, I have to say, it kind of does just look like a leisure centre or something.

“We’re based in Beverley, East Yorkshire, this is Humberside Airport just south of the Humber Bridge, and it is our local airport however I’ve never flown from here.”

The couple booked a flight from Humberside to Athens via Schiphol in Amsterdam. Once inside the airport, waiting for their flight, Molly confessed that she felt more like she was in a “school hall” than an airport.

However, Molly was “quite surprised” when she passed through the security desk. Upon entering the departure lounge, she expressed: “It’s actually a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be.

“I am pleasantly surprised because I didn’t think there would be anywhere to get food here. It’s quite nice, it feels like we’re in a lounge here. They also do have a duty free, and I didn’t expect them to have a duty free.”

Molly, who describes herself as a “Sky Scanner fiend” says she frequently searches for bargain flights from Humberside Airport rather than more conventional choices.

She added: “I’m always scanning, always looking, I am a Sky Scanner fiend and I am always checking Humberside.

“Every flight I have ever flown, I check Humberside first because I think, if I can connect even into Schiphol, it’s saving me so much time, I don’t have to drive into Manchester or London.”

Molly nevertheless concluded that whilst she would gladly fly from Humberside Airport again, she frequently discovers it can be more costly than neighbouring alternatives. She added: “The overall experience here is easy, calm, quiet.

“I’d fly from here again if it was cheaper. If it’s not usually a lot more expensive I would definitely use this. A lot of people are flying onwards from Schiphol to around the world.

“The experience with all of the staff, including the pilot, is way better than any other airport I’ve been in. And that included my very, very thorough search at security.”

Humberside Airport operates flights to Amsterdam, Jersey, Aberdeen, Majorca, and Lapland in Sweden and Finland. It also provides hoist flights to Hornsea substations.
