Turkey travel advice as Foreign Office issues update | Travel News | Travel
The Foreign Office has issued updated guidance for UK travellers heading to Turkey, warning of potential dangers in the water and reminding visitors of important local laws. The Government regularly updates its travel advice for British nationals abroad, and the latest change includes a fresh warning about swimming and beach safety.
Officials highlighted that fatal accidents occur every year in Turkey, both at sea and in swimming pools. “Every year, people drown in the sea and in swimming pools in Turkey. Always supervise children, even if they can swim or there is a lifeguard present,” the updated guidance states.
Holidaymakers are urged to be cautious when swimming in the ocean, as some beaches may have strong undercurrents and hidden hazards.
The advice said: “Hidden rocks or shallow depths can cause serious injury or death. Do not dive into unknown water. Follow local advice if jellyfish or urchins are present.”
Many of Turkey’s popular beaches operate a flag warning system, which visitors are strongly encouraged to follow.
A red flag means swimming is prohibited, while lifeguards and signage should always be obeyed.
Travellers are also reminded to take extra care on beaches without lifeguards or warning flags.
Beyond water safety, the Foreign Office has re-emphasised the importance of carrying photo identification at all times.
It is a legal requirement in Turkey, and police may carry out ID checks in busy areas such as Istanbul and at roadside checkpoints. Passports or residence permits should be kept on hand at all times.
The travel advice also continues to caution against all travel within 10km of the Syrian border due to ongoing conflict and a “heightened risk of terrorism.”
While most terrorist incidents have historically taken place in southeast Turkey, Ankara, and Istanbul, visitors are advised to remain vigilant, monitor local news, and follow instructions from authorities.
For those planning a beach holiday or city break, the Foreign Office said it is important to take basic safety precautions and be aware of local laws to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.
